Chris is now in his eighth year with the Wanderers having initially been the assistant to Martin Dobson at the Bolton youth academy. He has seen the likes of Dean Holden, Nicky Hunt, Kevin Nolan, Ricardo Vaz-Te and Joey O'Brien all progress through the ranks to first team level during his time at the Reebok.
What is your coaching philosophy?
My coaching philosophy is to always try and create a learning environment in order for the players to develop to their true potential.
What tip would you give to aspiring coaches?
I think it is important not to try and skip past levels of qualification and always have an open mind.
What would you change about the modern game?
I think professional clubs and organisations should invest more in youth development. i.e. 10% of their gross turnover should be re-invested into their grassroots provision.
Who has been your greatest teacher in football?
Dario Gradi and Ken Shellito.
Dario Gradi took up his present post as manager of Crewe Alexandra in June 1983. At the time, Crewe were the perennial whipping boys of the old 4th Division, having finished in the bottom three for 4 of the previous 5 seasons. Over the next 20 years, under Dario’s leadership, Crewe have been promoted 4 times and are now 2 divisions higher than when he took over. In addition, the ground has been completely redeveloped and crowds have increased five-fold. In 1998, he was awarded the MBE for his contributions to the sport of football.
Ken Shellito spent his entire playing career at Chelsea, signing for the club from Chelsea Juniors at the age of 17 and making his professional debut two years later against Nottingham Forest. Upon his retirement, Shellito joined the Chelsea coaching staff and took charge of the club's youth academy in 1968. In 1977, he was appointed manager of Chelsea.
What has been your greatest achievement to date in football?
Helping to develop premier league players and being a part of young peoples’ footballing dreams and aspirations.
What is the key to success in football?
It is very important to have the correct attitude, intrinsic motivation and a natural talent for the game.
How would you like to be remembered when your career ends?
I would like people to remember me as somebody who did their best in everything they did.
